CSS Sunday collage Welcome to Craft Schooling Sunday, thanks so much for joining me here! Phew, we have completed the 3 week mourning period that occurs right in the middle of summer, and now, let summer vacation really begin. Hmmm, in previous years maybe, when we were blessed with the opportunity to travel abroad and spend precious time with dear family. This year, well, we've already been on "vacation" of sorts since before Passover, with my teens learning by phone and traveling now and again to take tests, so this three week vacation period before the start of the Jewish month of Elul, and thus a return to school, will be a bit different this year. I do realize that the feeling of being on vacation is something that the kids need, so we will make a big effort to do barbeques (from our own porch with a mountain view) and take day trips to the Meditteranean coast, an hour from home, (can't wait for that!) and around Northern Israel where there are many many beautiful and interesting things to see.

And like I always say, now is a great time to get started with Succah decorations, when there is time to get creative! I have been saving a particular container all year long to cover a whole wall of the succah, and my current passion is making tiny origami stars and plastic bag pom poms which I will share soon! Okay, that is all for now, hope everyone is well, and taking advantage of a slightly different summer by using it to get creative! And now for the features from last week's party, enjoy!

The Mock Chopped Liver That Turned Out Green, But DELICIOUS!

I'm sorry, I don't have a photo at the moment of the mock chopped liver that turned out green because my family polished it off, and I don't have time to draw it right now as the fast of T'Isha B'Av is quickly approaching. Nonetheless I thought I'd post this for those other places in the world who are just starting their day and may wonder what to serve their families this afternoon! I served this together with Spelt rolls, a barley vegetable soup, vegetable potato kugel, and some black olive spread that I also made on a whim. Yumm, we are still stuffed!

Simple-spelt-oatmeal-rolls

A whole eight years ago I posted these photos of my healthful spelt and oatmeal rolls, and now I myself had to visit the blog to look up the recipe, so I realized that I should just re-post it as the photos are good enough, (though I did have to add a title and a watermark) unlike some of my very early blog posts. Tonight we are ushering in the very solemn day of T'Isha B'Av, which is also a mandatory 25 hour fast, (there are of course exceptions for children under bar/bat mitzvah age, those with illness or women after birth,) and we will be eating two vegetarian meals before the fast: one for sustenance and one right before the fast, that is eaten sitting on the floor and with symbolic foods of mourning.

So of course the family and the teens have to eat, and when the kids used up the bread I had planned to serve them later in the day I realized that once upon a time I did bake bread (pre-teen daughter taking over the baking) and that I could certainly revisit those days in order to serve my family something really healthy and great tasting before the fast. To top it off we just happened to have a bag of spelt flour in the freezer, so voila, I baked, or rather I am baking as the rolls have yet to go into the oven.

Sketchbook Quote With Art Supply Doodles

Art-quote-sketchbook Inspiring quotes can be a great way to boost mental energy and just the little push you might be needing at any given moment, especially when it comes to negative thinking regarding your art or craft practice! I saw this quote last week and just couldn't resist using it to practice my lettering skills, though truthfully I'd love to hang it on my wall as well. Practicing lettering and drawing together with giving one's self a little pep talk is a great combination, so use this quote, or find some more yourself and start creating inspiring and artful quotes to add that extra something to your day. If you don't have a sketchbook, you can easily make your own to fill with quotes by simply punching holes in watercolor paper, or even lightweight cardboard (I've been collecting cereal boxes for this purpose), and holding them together with small binder rings or even ribbon. So no excuses, creativity is calling you!

While I have not shared my painting adventures of late here on the blog, lets just say I have been trying my hand at painting clouds and trying to figure out what style of clouds would work with the style of landscape painting I'm also working hard to develop. Hmmm? I remembered all the amazing Turner paintings I saw at the Tate Gallery in London way back when, and thought I'd revisit them as well as the entire movement of art called Romanticism, of which Turner is one of the most well known painters, as portrayal of nature is one of their strengths, and thus the clouds! Then I realized that sharing art history and art appreciation here on the blog could actually be really interesting, and help the creative practice of just about anyone. No art was ever created in a vacuum, which means that learning from, and being inspired by other artists is the way to go. And there are so many things to learn beyond just looking at a work of art, namely the intentions of the art, the context of the art, and even how and where the art was created and lastly how it was received in its time. So, while I do not currently intend on writing an entire series of art history posts, lets start with this one, and you may just realize that delving into art history can be interesting and inspiring, which is my goal.

Summer is zooming by on what feels like a never ending school vacation with just one out of three teens slated to return to school in another month, and the other two, hmmmm. I have been blessed to travel every summer for at least a month each year, but this year we are staying put so we will have to plan lots of day trips to make the most of the three week vacation coming up right after Tisha B'Av. Speaking of T'isha B'av, the 9th of Av, this major fast day and saddest day on the Jewish calendar is coming up on Wednesday night, so this week is all about thinking about how we as individuals can help rebuild the world, even with small acts. In the face of the pandemic, there is more obvious food for thought than in previous years and yet with all the coping that is required sometimes it is hard to look at the bigger picture, and yet we must! So wishing everyone a meaningful week and a productive week, which might just mean filling your days with creativity! So enjoy the features from last week's party, and then get off the computer and get crafting, or maybe learn a new doodle to add to your sketchbook?

A Peek In My Sketchbook: Simple Doodle Butterflies

Simple-doodle-butterflies My sketchbook practice is still going strong, and I have so many things to share, in fact I'm at least a month behind! So I now present to you, doodle butterflies, because butterflies, whether cartoon like or realistic, are really so simple to draw and look great! With something like a butterfly, wherein getting the wings right is crucial, I would recommend starting in pencil and then going over that in ink, I certainly did! And of course don't forget to draw them from the side, in a few sizes and go to town decorating those wings with all kinds of patterns, especially if you choose to go much larger than I did. Top off your butterfly doodle sketch with some fauxligraphy (fake calligraphy) or brush lettering, if you are familiar with that, and voila, a nice simple sketchbook page is completed, no need to paint or patch over any mistakes! I love these bold butterflies, but I also love the look of butterflies sketched with lots of wing veins, so keep on reading to see those!

Little-painted-cloud-birthday-cake toppers I am rushing to post this cloud cake topper DIY as tonight is the beginning of the 9 day mournign period on the Jewish calendar, and we certainly won't be throwing any parties.That said I wanted to post this now as a message to all those who might be trying their hand at illustration or painting: save anything you do on heavy paper, you can cut it up and use it in a pinch! As I was trying to pull together a whole display of fun party decor for my daughter's 18th birthday, I spied a small pile of illustrations I'd made two plus years ago, and realized that the little gouche cloud illustration would be perfect to cut up and use on her cake, and phew, it came together really quickly with sweet as can be results. I also used some watercolor strawberry paintings we'd done together years ago, so really, save those art projects, they don't take up much space, and who knows, maybe you, like me, will be pressed for time and needing something to cut up and transformi into a cake topper! Actually come to think of it, if I hadn't already cut up the watercolor strawberry and used it in a centerpiece, that would have been a really adorable cake topper too! I think I may just repost that tutorial next. Okay, lets take a closer look at these cute cloud cake toppers that would be perfect for just about any occasion that warrants a cake and a message!
